Success Lessons From Wellington The Iron Duke by John Watson
Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), who later became the Duke of Wellington and the hero who beat Napoleon at Waterloo, had to overcome his own mother's lack of faith in him in order to make a success of his military career.
She once commented: "I vow to God I don't know what I shall do with my awkward son, Arthur". She even believed he had little aptitude for soldiering! Perhaps this motivated him to become one of the greatest generals in British military history. Several key success lessons can be learned from his life.
Millions are programmed from an early age by their own parents and friends who place verbal limits on what they can achieve. Too often,How can you expect to get anywhere without appreciating where you're at now and where you've been, they allow these limits to control them for the rest of their lives. Wellesley, for one, managed to demolish the limits placed on him by his own mother.
However, at first, Arthur appeared to prove that his mother's opinion of him was correct. He showed little aptitude for anything except playing the violin and socializing.
But, by 1793, when the French King was guillotined and war was declared on France, he had learned the huge success lesson of the importance of focus. He decided to take his army career seriously and burnt his violin in his fireplace so that he could concentrate all his energies on succeeding as a soldier.
This was probably a wise move. The old saying "Jack of all trades and master of none," has real meaning. Successful people soon learn that they cannot do everything they want to and need to concentrate their energies on a few key projects.
Wellesley and his family had enough influence and money to buy his way up the officer ranks of the army. He was able to rise extremely quickly from the status of a junior officer to that of lieutenant-colonel at the age of 25.
He used the leverage of family and money to speed up his progress to military success. Successful people do not go it alone if they can help it. Life is too short.
However, Wellesley did not rely on family influence alone. After his regiment was sent to India in 1796, Wellesley began to distinguish himself. He worked hard to master his craft and took care of his troops.
He became a master of the reverse-slope tactic which he would use later at Waterloo. He kept his forces screened from artillery fire behind the brow of a hill. He probably realized early on that dead soldiers do not achieve victory.
He won several important battles in India and then, in 1805, returned to England. In 1808, he arrived in Portugal which was occupied by the French. He soon began a series of victories and, when given sole command, launched the Peninsular war which was to drive Napoleon's armies from Portugal and Spain by 1814.
The French had seemed unbeatable until Wellesley took them on. In 1808 he had told a friend that he would not be chased off the continent as so many other similar forces had been, because he had made a study of French tactics, and would not be intimidated by their reputation.
"They may overwhelm me but I don't think they will outmanoeuvre me,I am always polite and tactful. First, because I am not afraid of them, as everybody else seems to be; and secondly, because if what I hear of their system of manoeuvre is true, I think it a false one against steady troops. I suspect that all the continental armies were more than half beaten before the battle was begun - I, at least, will not be frightened beforehand.'
Wellington knew how to stand steady in the face of a fearsome attack and he instilled the same spirit into his troops. Cool, steady, courage is a major factor in most success stories. Too many people are beaten by their own lack of self-confidence before they even start. If they do start and run into problems they panic and panic leads quickly to failure.
Wellington was called several affectionate names by his troops such as Old Hookey (he had a prominent nose), Our Atty (Arthur) and the Bugger that Beats the French. He had words for them too which show his contempt for the run away fathers and petty criminals who made up a part of his army. However, his words also show his laconic sense of humour.
Before the battle of Waterloo, it is said that Wellington said of his own troops "This army is composed of the scum of the earth, I don't know what effect these men will have on the enemy, but by God they terrify me!"
During the five years of the Peninsular war, he did not take one day's leave. His work ethic was huge - another mark of successful people. He campaigned backwards and forwards across Portugal and Spain.
He was occasionally forced to retreat because of the large numbers opposing him, but never lost a battle or even a single cannon. He was almost always outnumbered by the large French forces that were occupying Spain.
There followed a one step forward, one step back style of campaign that kept Wellington one step ahead of his often numerically superior enemies.
When in doubt about his army's ability to defeat larger enemy forces he would retire to his strong defensive network - the Lines of Torres Vedras. His tactical skill proved itself again and again. Wellington, like most other successful people, developed his skills constantly and was careful not to bite off more than he could chew.
The leadership Wellesley showed in the Peninsular campaign was legendary. He expected the best from his men but was also a harsh disciplinarian. He hanged looters. He valued the help of his Portuguese and Spanish allies too much to allow thieves to alienate them. Yet his troops knew that he never risked their lives in battle without good cause.
After driving the French from the Peninsula, Wellington pushed on into France itself until Napoleon, pressed by Wellington in the south and the Prussian, Russian and Austrian allies in the north, was forced to abdicate in 1814.
Wellington was praised as the hero of Europe, but peace did not last long. In March of 1815, Napoleon escaped from his exile on the island of Elba and once again threatened Europe.
Arthur Wellesley was now made the first Duke of Wellington and marched his troops into Belgium where Napoleon had gathered his army.
At a place called Waterloo the French and British armies met for what was to be the final battle. The allies of the British like the Prussians, Belgians and the Dutch should not be forgotten. They played a large part in the victory.
Wellington,in fact, himself, was everywhere on the field of battle encouraging his men and holding them steady against the legendary French army and their great general, Napoleon.
Wellington said of him that his presence on the battle field was worth 40,000 men. The same could have been said of Wellington himself.
Wellington eventually inflicted an overwhelming defeat on Napoleon, but the victory cost a large number of lives. Wellington had become known as the 'Iron Duke' by his men but even he wept when he learned of the numbers of men who had lost their lives on that day.
The British had suffered 15,000 casualties and the French 40,000. Waterloo was to be Wellington's last battle. He returned to England and resumed a political career begun many years before. He eventually became Prime Minister in 1828.
He was not popular as a politician and once had to fight a duel with one of his political opponents - Lord Winchelsea. However, both men wisely aimed to miss and honour was satisfied!
The Duke was not a man to be dominated or threatened by anyone. Unlike Prince Charles,3352 Ugg Bailey Button Mini Grey Boots, he was not too worried about his private writings being made public. He made a famous reply to a rejected mistress, who threatened to publish the love-letters he had written to her: "Publish and be damned!"
Queen Victoria consulted him frequently. She asked his advice about how to deal with sparrows which had nested on the roof of the Crystal Palace. Wellington's reply was brief and to the point, "Sparrow-hawks, Ma,am". He was right. The sparrows were soon gone!
In one of my favourite films "Waterloo", the Duke was asked what his plans were in case he was killed. The Duke replied: "To beat the French!"
He was a man of action and few words although he did in fact plan very carefully and took great care to choose the right ground for his battles. Success demands both action and planning.
Wellington made many mistakes in his life and career but his ability to achieve success shines out above them all. He refused to accept the valuation placed on him by his own mother. He focused all his efforts on his chosen career and mastered the skills necessary to succeed in it.
He used leverage when it was offered. He was not intimidated by the reputation of the French at that time and had the courage and confidence to face up to his military, political and private enemies. He knew how to plan and how to act. He was a great leader who led by example.
As a public figure Wellington remained a respected leader until his death in 1852. He was offered a cup of tea on his deathbed. His polite reply - 'Yes, if you please' - were his last words on earth.
Wellington died at Walmer Castle in Kent in 1852 and was given the honour of a State Funeral. It was a magnificent tribute to a great military hero. The Duke is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral next to another great hero, Lord Nelson.
If you are ever in London, try to visit the Duke's house and the awesome statues to the south east of Hyde Park. I love gazing at these statues. They give a sense of Wellington's greatness and the courage of his 'steady' troops.

see the movie Matrix for a great metaphor
What Story are you Enacting?
How much of your life is directed from the foundation of unexamined mythology? What if we are all enacting some sort of story in our lives?
Now what do I mean by story? I mean that we have some vision, set of ideas, or beliefs about ourselves that define us as a central character, in what could be called a "myth" or "story" that we're living out. All of the elements of the story have been either passed down as part of our culture or upbringing, intuited, or simply fabricated in our own minds. We then go about enacting our stories as if they they were true, thus embodying the script from which we live our lives.
So now you may say, "yes I can certainly buy that, I'm very well aware that we are a product of our own thoughts and beliefs. So what's the big deal?"
The big deal is this: The vast majority of us don't know that we're enacting a story. We actually think this is real life that we're living! (see the movie Matrix for a great metaphor). By real life, I mean that we're approaching life based on a set of assumptions that aren't necessarily backed by good evidence.
So when you don't know that you're enacting a story, you are completely at its mercy, with little control over the role you play and the course your life takes,How do you process a Decision.
Now to make matters even more complicated, in addition to enacting our own individual stories, we are also part of stories which are bigger than us. We are enacting stories within our relationships with individuals, and the groups we are involved in, such as our families, work groups, community organizations, our countries, etc. Even our civilization itself is acting out a story, much of which we may not even be aware of.
Humans tend to enact whatever story we choose to adopt as our own, and will settle for the best one available,3352 Ugg Bailey Button Mini Grey Boots. If we don't take the time to create a better one, we'll continue enacting our current story, even if it isn't working for us.
What story are you enacting and is it working for you?
Here is a simple exercise to uncover your current story:
1. Discover your story.
First, assume you are in fact enacting a story - if this is a new concept, it certainly won't hurt to give it a chance. Based on this assumption, uncover the elements of your story. Be a detective, hunting for clues. Look at all your behaviors and describe them piece by piece, until the "whole" story emerges.
2. Evaluate your story.
Now assess your story. Are you happy with it? What would you change, remove," This is very important, or add to this story to make it more satisfying? Re-write your story - become the author of the grandest story you can envision - a story that truly inspires.
3,There are many reasons people seek degrees in today's day and age. As a grown adult. Tell your story.
Share your new story with important people in your life. Talk about your specific role in the story and why it appeals to you. The more you talk about your new story, the more it will become a part of you.
4. Rehearse your new role.
Commit to living your new role in some way. Make at least one change that is in alignment with the new story.
5. Explore how your new story fits into the bigger story of your family, organization, corporation, country, and world. What contribution can your new individual story can make to your bigger story? Explore any obstacles presented by this bigger story and refine yours if necessary so that it isn't overpowered or subverted by the bigger one.
If you are a facilitator, coach, consultant, trainer, etc, I encourage you to use this exersize to help you clients re-write their own stories.
Remember, you are the authors and you can write your story any way you wish. You're only limited by your imaginations!

How can your goals
Can You See The Reflection Of Your Success? by Mohammad Shafie
A rather inspirational verse from the hit song, Man In The Mirror', sung by none other than Michael Jackson, hell can not be abandoned without some form of altercation. Escape is not easy. Don't worry, I'm not here to blabber about his impressive singing skills and slick dance moves or the well documented eccentricities surrounding him and his lifestyle. More importantly, I will touch on how your world is just like one gigantic mirror and how it should be reflecting the success you hope to achieve in your life,3352 Ugg Bailey Button Mini Grey Boots.
You must first and foremost understand that your outer world or reality is a reflection and result of the actions of your inner world or reality. This simply means that your character, mentality, beliefs and thoughts are reflected in the surroundings, environment and people - family, friends, colleagues, teachers, mentors, superiors, etc- you mix with in reality.
The more you ponder over certain things, situations, ideas, thoughts and people , the more closely you will focus on them in reality. Consequently, the more you notice things in reality that affirm what you are thinking about, the more you feel what you are believing or thinking is true even though there may be substantial evidence that prove otherwise.
For example, if you believe that all taxi drivers are reckless and inconsiderate and then see news reports on accidents caused by taxi drivers or you witness an accident involving a taxi driver (although he may not be the cause of it), you are more likely to stick by that belief although it may not be entirely true.
Now that you know the basics of reflection, take some time to ponder about the following to get a better reflection of your success:
1) Reflect closely on your mentality, beliefs and thoughts. How can you make them clearer, more concise and more positive so as to better shape your goals, dreams and aspirations?
2) How can your goals, dreams and aspirations be reflected in reality? What effective measures and actions can you take towards ensuring that they are reflected in your reality?
3) What evidence, success stories, successful people, etc that you can get information on to further affirm your thoughts and beliefs about your goals and aspirations so as to drive you to continue taking effective actions and pursuing those goals and aspirations?
Now,Too often, can you see the reflection of your success,A calling is who you are.?

how do you accurately profile somebody
Interpersonal Communication With The Enneagram by Joel Seah
The Enneagram is one of the many personality profiling systems in the world today. However,3352 Ugg Bailey Button Mini Grey Boots, its origins remain relatively unclear. There are groups of people who believe that the Enneagram first originated in the 10th or 11th century among the Sufi, which is a mystical sect of Islam. There are also others who believe that the Enneagram existed much earlier, back in 2500 B,visit Irene's website at ..C. in Babylon, the middle east of today.
Regardless of when the Enneagram was created, it still remains a very accurate tool to profile people today, simply because human nature has not really changed all these years.
The Enneagram is also one of the few dynamic profiling systems around. Instead of boxing people up, it describes how a person will behave when feeling good or under stress, and shows the way a person should grow in order to achieve his or her potential in life.
In total, there are nine basic personality types, and these personalities are described using numbers, instead of words. The reason for using numbers is to keep things neutral. Words have a tendency to create meaning in our minds, and we might unknowingly become biased towards certain types because of cultural or societal influence.
Thus, the nine types are denoted by numbers ranging from one to nine, and the numbers bear similar weights, which means that having a bigger personality number does not translate to being better or worse.
You will come across different Eneagram teachings that use different words to describe the types. Do remember that the descriptions are really for illustration and are meant to help you understand the type better. Different sources will use different words to describe each type, so you need not get confused over that.
Each personality type has got nine levels of health, starting from the healthiest at level one, to the unhealthiest at level nine. So if you compute all possible combinations using the wings and lines, along with levels of health, you are looking at potentially four hundred and eight six variations of personality types.
With so many possible combinations, how do you accurately profile somebody? Unlike many other personality profiling that requires the use of surveys or questionnaires, you can actually profile somebody with the Enneagram simply through observation, you do not even look for those options and opportunities.
Of course, the length of time for your observation will definitely affect the accuracy of your profiling. Though we will effectively be of only one basic type, every one of us will react according to different situations and environments that we are in. Therefore, it is no surprise that we will display characteristics of all nine personality types throughout our lives. So the best time to observe someone is during their down-time, or most natural state.
You can still use a questionnaire to profile somebody, or to confirm your observations. However,As a leader, with time and practice, you will realise that you can make do without a questionnaire. That would give you a huge boost in improving your interpersonal communication skills, and will definitely add greater value to you as an effective communicator.

The Ripple Effect: Small Steps Lead to Big Results
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit." -Aristotle
Procrastination is the single habit at the root of so many problems that plague all of us at one time or another - challenges with managing our time, relationships, projects, and information.
Procrastination is doing low-priority tasks and activities instead of the high-priority ones which so often contribute the most to our success. For some, procrastination becomes a harmful habit which impedes personal and professional development,In order to be successful in any area of your life the way that you choose and want it to be.
If procrastination is so harmful, why do we do it? We tend to put off doing things for the following reasons:
**They are unpleasant to do.
**They are difficult or complex to do.
**They involve making tough decisions that can be overwhelming.
When we don't want to do something that is unpleasant or difficult, we find less important things to do that will keep us "busy" so we have an excuse for why we didn't get around to it. But putting something off does not make it go away, and postponing it often just makes it worse. As someone once said, "Killing time murders opportunities."
I'll share a key to success that I've learned from my own life experiences,3352 Ugg Bailey Button Mini Grey Boots...
If you want to make big changes in your life, start by making small ones.
What small change have you made recently that yielded positive results for you? By thinking about what is working, you are focusing on the positive. Remember that we attract whatever we choose to give our attention to -- whether wanted or unwanted. When we focus on what we want, we are more likely to attract it into our lives.
Unlike a long list of unrealistic New Year's resolutions that usually get broken before the end of January, small changes can create a ripple effect of another small change, followed by another. In other words, small changes can lead to other related changes. Next thing you know, you've generated an unstoppable tidal wave!
Ask yourself this question: What's one thing that, if you did consistently, would make the greatest positive difference in your life?
I asked a client (I'll call her Kate) this question a couple of years ago during a coaching call,You know why. Her initial response was that she wanted to start taking the train to work instead of driving her car in horrible rush-hour traffic. But Kate said she could not do that because she often needed the car to get to meetings during her workday. I asked her if there were other means of transportation available to her (subway, taxi, etc.) on days she had appointments that were not walking distance from her office.
Kate was not sure how it would work, but she was willing to commit to a one-month trial period. I spoke with her at the end of her first week. She recognized how this one change was already having a tremendous positive impact on her life. Over time, the impact grew larger. The ripple effect was doing its thing!
Here are some of the benefits Kate has experienced:
* Kate is able to sleep 30 minutes later each workday, since she actually gets to work quicker by taking the train.
* Kate has saved enough money in gas and parking fees to pay for her coaching sessions with me.
* Kate has time for her professional reading, which she does in the mornings on her way to work.
* Kate has time for pleasure reading on the way home. (She had not read a novel in years, you'd be picking out important names!)
* Because she has to catch the train home at a specific time, Kate leaves the office at a set time instead of staying for "just a few more minutes" (which was never just a few minutes!) to get caught up.
* Kate is conducting more business using technology (teleconference calls and webinars), which saves her a lot of time that she used to spend getting to and from meetings. Others appreciate this time savings, too!
* By leaving the driving to someone else, Kate's stress level is much lower when she gets home.
* Kate's reduced stress levels gives her added energy, and she now works out at a nearby health club a few times a week. (Before, she barely had the energy to crawl in the door of her home. Once she got there, she rarely ventured out at night.)
* Kate met a wonderful man at her train stop near her home, and they started dating last year. (They're still dating, and the future looks promising!)
I could keep listing the effects this one change has had on Kate's life. It's a perfect example of the ripple effect in action -- all of this by making one change, which led to another, and another.

" knowing you need it to buy a new car
Manifesting Home Runs
Recently I was in Cleveland, Ohio, about two thousand miles from my home in southern California, visiting my brother and his family. My sister-in-law and I took my eight-year-old niece to her first baseball game, where we saw the Cleveland Indians host the Minnesota Twins. We had excellent seats behind home plate, and little Caitlin loved the music, the "wave," and everything about her first ballpark experience. Of course, it was even better when she saw her home team defeat the visitors 2-1.
I'm no baseball expert but I can say that this game wasn't what you'd call an outstanding display of hitting. Few times did either team manage to get more than four batters up per inning. Both teams scored a run in the third inning, and it was the bottom of the eighth inning before we saw another score. Cleveland had loaded the bases with two out. Designated hitter Travis Hafner took one ball, one strikeand got hit by a pitch. Which meant he automatically went to first base, all the runners advanced, and Ronnie Belliard trotted home for the winning run. No heroics,as below, no big hit, no dramatic, deliberate and regular 'calming of the mind', crash-into-a-wall missed catch. But an errant pitch that wasn't enough to hurt the batter,3352 Ugg Bailey Button Mini Grey Boots, but was enough to allow him to win the game for his team.
By the way, for those of you who don't speak baseball, bear with me just a moment
Did Hafner dream about getting hit by a pitch? Not likely. He's a designated hitterhis purpose on the team is to step in and hit the ball, not have the ball hit him! But if you think about it,the evidence shows us that the quality of sleep is very important, is his purpose really to hit the ball? Or is it to win the game? If you put it in that perspective, then he did exactly what he was supposed to do. He won the game for his team. It may not have been his preferred means, but he accomplished his end. A win is a win in the final tally.
When we're working on manifesting a goal, what are we focusing on? Are we thinking about the means, or the end? It's one thing to think, "I need money," knowing you need it to buy a new car, and another to focus on "I need a new car." Is it really the money we want to manifest, or is it the car? Maybe we win the car in a lottery. Maybe we inherit it from a long-lost uncle. But we have the new car, and it wasn't the money we were after anyway.
It's not up to us to determine the "how"; the universe is smarter than we are, and will do that for us. We need to look clearly for the "what," and trust that the universe, the Divine, can handle the "how."
